The Lady Knights faced off with the Lady Bears from Griffin on Tuesday night and were looking to atone for their fourth quarter collapse suffered three weeks ago against the Lady Bears in a 43-39 loss.

Upson-Lee outscored Griffin 17-7 in the fourth quarter on Tuesday night, but it was their performance in the second and third quarters which led them to a 42-34 loss to the Lady Bears.

“Just an over all poor effort in the middle of the game,” stated Lady Knight head coach Bart Phillips. “We fell apart in the second and third quarter. We came back and played really well in the fourth quarter. We didn’t give up, which shows that the girls are still playing hard. We just have to learn how to put a good four quarters together. We going to continue to work hard in practice and get better everyday.”

The Lady Knights suffocated the Griffin offense with a tough defense in the first quarter. Upson-Lee unfortunately, had some trouble scoring also, but the Lady Knights were able to get off decent shots, which is more than can be said for Griffin in the first quarter.

Upson-Lee junior Ke’Ondra Ausbrooks played perhaps her best game of the season, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Four of those 10 rebounds came in the first quarter. The Lady Knights finished the first quarter with a one point 6-5 lead.

The second quarter was one of runs by each team. Upson-Lee jumped out to an early 7-0 run to start the second quarter, taking a 13-5 lead. However, it was vicious defense and sharp shooting which led Griffin to an 11-0 run to close out the first half. Griffin led the Lady Knights 16-13, as the sloppily played half came to an end.

In the third quarter, the Lady Knights seemingly had nothing go well for them. Griffin took advantage of the Lady Knights’ troubles and had their best quarter of the game, scoring 13 points. Upson-Lee only scored four points in the quarter, and trailed 29-17 as the fourth quarter began.

After scoring only 17 points in the first three quarters, the Lady Knights offense clicked, scoring 17 points in the final period. Upson-Lee began to force Griffin to turn the ball over with their half court trap, and senior Jasmine Davis caught fire from the perimeter. Davis led all UL players with 11 points, scoring eight points in the fourth. The Lady Knights outscored the Lady Bears 17-7 in the quarter, but fell short in a 42-34 defeat.

Jasmine Davis led the Lady Knights with 11 points. Ke’Ondra Ausbrooks finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kenya Harris added six points, Demeshia Russell scored five points, while Kiashona Carter chipped in with two points.

Upson-Lee (2-5, 3-10) faced the Lady Raiders (5-1, 8-8) from Riverdale High School Friday night at the ULHS gymnasium. See Tuesday’s edition of The Thomaston Times for the results.
