To the Editor:

She’s black, lives in North Carolina, and long about three months ago, she, who is the Pastor Evelyn Tolliver, along with many other black pastors in the region, urged their churches for the first time in the history of the black church to sit out a Presidential election. Why? In the month of May when the pastors joined in with many other voters throughout North Carolina to pass a referendum against gay marriages, the old freedom fighter and visionary up in the White House did the unthinkable. He decided to support gay marriage.

What? Dang it! “You received 95 percent of our vote in 2008,” they screamed. “We should’ve listened to Jesse Jackson way back when.”

Maybe you need to hear it again – For the first time in the history of the black church, members were asked not to vote.

And we thought Michael Vick was having problems in Philadelphia. Wait till Obama’s November in North Carolina.

But, according to a recent New York Times article, Pastor Tolliver has had a change of heart. I realized, she said, he’s not just the president of the Christians. He’s got to be the president of everybody.

Yet, if you are an Obama supporter, you still might be a little concerned about the comments made by Dexter Handy, a black landscaper in North Carolina, who remains unprepared to vote. I can say I was more excited to vote for Obama last time because of history being made.

The key word here is excited, which means to get stirred emotionally. And sometimes when a human is stirred, they make the wrong decision or use bad judgment. Here’s a suggestion for all of those who still might be excited over the Obama of 2008. Remember the words of a black pastor from Georgia: “judge not by the color of the skin, but by the content of the character.”

They might settle you.
