It was a long night for the Flint River players and fans as they made the lengthy journey from Woodbury to Valdosta. They were greeted by a very impressive and efficient Valwood team.

Much like last week’s loss to Heritage, Flint River found themselves trailing early, surrendering the first 20 points to the Valiants. Junior Will Couch continued his tough running for the Wildcats. His 78-yard touchdown run brought the score to 20-7.

Unfortunately for the road squad, Valwood answered with a scoring frenzy, and pulled away by the third quarter. While trailing big in the fourth, Flint River would get in with a 6-yard touchdown run, again by Couch. The ensuing extra point saw a bad snap which forced holder Seth Short to roll out and throw to the endzone. Sophomore Austin Hobbs caught the pass for a two-point conversion. The final score read 50-15 Valwood.

Next week, after three tough road games to start 2012, the Wildcats (1-2) host Dawson Street in their home opener. Dawson Street participated in a preseason jamboree hosted by FRA, and they, along with Flint River, won both of their games. Dawson Street presents a much more favorable matchup for the Cats than did their last two opponents.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m., but please come out early for some special patriotic events. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. as Flint River Academy commemorates POW/MIA Recognition Day and honors Trey Bartlett, a FRA alum that was killed by an IED in Iraq. LTC Stu Metcalfe will parachute in with a POW/MIA flag and the game ball. A bagpiper will play, and four Russian Yaks are scheduled to do a missing man fly by. Other inspiring activities include a 21-Gun Salute, an Honor Guard, the USAF Bugle Corps, and Mountain 94.5 will be broadcasting live from the FRA football field. Activities will begin at 6 p.m.
