The Upson-Lee Lady Knights junior varsity softball team defeated the Lady Jags of Spalding High School and Mother Nature on Wednesday, as they cruised to a 16-5 rain-shortened victory.

The Lady Jaguars of Spalding jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, connecting on three hits in the frame. In the bottom of the first the Lady Knights answered with seven runs, as their bats came alive, connecting on five hits in their first plate appearances.

Bethany Smith, Cheyenne Bentley, Hannah Watson, and Kaylee Ellington started the bottom of the first off with four straight hits, with Bentley drilling a double to left center field. All four players would come home to score in the inning, thanks in part to a couple of errors in the inning from the Lady Jaguars.

Sophomore Kaylee Ellington toed the rubber for the Lady Knights in the contest, and sat down the Lady Jags in order in the top of the second inning, recording two of her three strike outs in the game in the top of the second.

With a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Knights turned up the pressure on their opponents from the Griffin area. Cheyenne Salter led the inning off by drawing a walk, followed by the second of three singles in the game by Bethany Smith. Smith led the Lady Knights with three hits, three runs scored, and two RBI. The Lady Knights scored four more runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking an 11-2 lead. Brianna Reveire and Harleigh Lippert added base hits in the inning for the Lady Knights, and the rout was on.

Spalding added three runs in the third inning, but the Lady Knights’ damage had already been done, and Mother Nature was about to do some damage of her own. With a 16-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, the game was called due to heavy rains, and the junior varsity Lady Knights earned their first victory of the season.

Smith’s three hits paced the Lady Knights in the contest, with Harleigh Lippert and Hannah Watson adding two hits each. Watson’s hits both came in the form of doubles. Cheyenne Bentley, Brianna Reveire, and Kaylee Ellington each tallied one hit in the game, while Peyton Trickle chipped in with an RBI.
