The Flint River Academy Wildcats welcomed the Covenant, Central Fellowship, and Dawson Street football teams for a jamboree last Friday night to kick off the 2012 season. The FRA Wildcats started the festivities against Covenant and after getting off to a slow start, Nathan Adams got the Wildcats into the end zone with the first score of the 2012 season and the Wildcats were off and running.

FRA showed a balanced offensive attack in the first game of the night with Quarterback Seth Short going 6 for 9 in the air with two TD passes and two carries for 24 yards. Patrick McGinn and Nathan Strickland both collected touchdown catches in the first game. The offensive line was led by Seniors Stuart Gregg and Skyler Young. Defensively, the Wildcats did not allow a first down by Covenant and showed great pursuit and passion across the line. The defense was led by Linebackers Chase Tyson, Frank Cotney, and Jay Adams. All in all, it was a good showing by FRA in their first test.

In the second game the Wildcats faced Central Fellowship and the offense picked up where they left off in the first game with a score on the ground by Junior Seth Short. Short had one rush for 5 yards and a TD, and was 5 for 8 through the air for 88 yards, one touchdown, and a two-point conversion. Senior Caleb Harker, Junior Will Couch, and Sophomore David Scott Chester all showed promise running the football. The defense again put up a strong showing, only allowing two first downs and no points.

The night saw everyone get a chance to play and to get on film for evaluation and experience. The Wildcats will train hard this week as they prepare for Gatewood in two weeks, opening the season at Eatonton.

New FRA Head Coach Jason Carrera remarked, “The boys must continue to work hard as there were many mistakes on the night to correct, and we will work on those over the next couple of weeks. I thought the night showed the hard work the boys had put in over the summer and at camp and it was evident in their play and results. I thank all four teams for attending and it was a great night for the fans and supporters and I thank all of you.”

Flint River Academy will celebrate the beginning of the 2012 Athletic Season with a Tailgate on Thursday, August 23 at 5 p.m. The FRA Cheerleaders and Dance Team will perform and the football and softball players will be introduced. FRA C-Team will play Community at 5:30 p.m. and the FRA JV football team will take on Community at 7:30 p.m. This event will be fun for the whole family, please join us!
