The Thomaston-Upson Dixie Minors All-Stars (ages 9-10) traveled to LaGrange on Saturday, to face off with the Hoganville All-Stars in the first round of the District Tournament.
After a slow start by both teams, the T-U All-Stars scored 16 runs in the top of the sixth inning, demolishing the Hoganville All-Stars by a 21-1 score.
The hometown kids jumped out to a 1-0 start in the top of the first inning, after Tanner “Meat” Gilbert came home to score on a Ben McDaniel single. Ty Rechtorovic also added a single in the inning for the T-U All-Stars in the top of the first.
The Hoganville All-Star evened the game up in the bottom of the first inning, but it would be the only run of the game for the boys from just north of LaGrange.
Thanks to their pitching and defense, the T-U All-Stars scored the winning run in the second inning when Noah Strom scored a run on a sac bunt from Mason Wilder, and added another run in the third inning, when Gilbert came home to score after a Hoganville fielding error.
With a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, the T-U All-Stars added two more runs. Zyrice Scott, who led the hometown kids with three hits, three runs scored, and 4 RBI, led the inning off with walk, later coming home to score on a single by Mason Wilder. After a passed ball and a stolen base, Wilder scored on a ground out by Parker McWaters.
The T-U All-Stars defense was exceptional in the game, and the pitching was even better. Tanner Gilbert pitched five innings, allowing only one run on three hits, while striking our five batters. Austin Hendricks pitched one inning, allowing no hits and striking out two batters to end the game.
The offensive assault continued in the top of the sixth inning, with the T-U All-Stars scoring 16 innings in the frame. All 12 players on the team scored runs in the inning, with six players scoring twice in the inning.
Zyrice Scott paced the T-U All-Stars with three hits, three runs, and four RBI. Ben McDaniel added four hits, two runs, and 1 RBI in the game.
