For the second time in the past three years, Upson-Lee senior Tessa Patterson has been named The Thomaston Times Female Athlete of the Year. Tessa is the first ever two-time recipient of the award.

Patterson is perhaps one of the best athletes to ever come through Upson-Lee High School, setting three school records along the way. While at Upson-Lee High School, Tessa broke the school’s record in cross country, the 3200 meters, and the pole vault.

As a freshman, Patterson broke the school record in cross country for the first time, and continued to break the school record several times over throughout her career. Eventually, Patterson would lower her time to her personal best, a school record with a time of 19:56 seconds.

Tessa also broke the school record in the 3200 meter race several times in her four years at Upson-Lee High School, running her personal best this season at the Region Track meet, setting the school record once again with a time of 12:20 in the eight-lap race. Patterson also holds the school record in the pole vault for the Lady Knights, with her personal best and school record coming this season at Lamar County with a vault of 8’6” in April.

After the 2011 cross country season, Tessa received an athletic scholarship to run for the cross country team at Augusta State University. Tessa will join the team in mid-August and is currently running everyday in order to prepare for the upcoming season. Patterson will major in Kinesiology/Health and Exercise Science while at Augusta State.

Tessa is the daughter of Steve and Sheila Patterson.
