The Second Annual American Flag Retirement Ceremony was held at the civic center Tuesday night, May 20. The ceremony was put together with the help of Upson-Lee NJROTC, Boy Scout Troop 25, and the John Houstoun Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

CDR Jim Jarvis of the Upson-Lee NJROTC read a passage that stated, “I am more than just red, white and blue cloth shaped into a design. I am a silent centinel of freedom... Your sons gather beneath me to offer their lives on the battlefields, to preserve the liberty I represent. That’s why I love the American people. That’s why I have flown so proudly.”

As the Boy Scouts placed the flags into the flames, local veterans walked with them honoring the flag.

“It is important that the scouts and NJROTC come together to show reverence for the flag and all it stands for,” CDR Jarvis said.
