It’s time to put on your boogie shoes, get all dolled up and footloose on the northside Square on Saturday, April 18 for a dancing celebration of Living it up Downtown!
The Street Dance will be held from 6 p.m. till 11 p.m and will include live entertainment and great opportunities for family fun.
The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with a performance by Heather Williamson, the first ever Thomaston Idol, and will be followed by 2007 Thomaston Idol winner, Levi Austen.
At 7 p.m. the Upson-Lee Middle School will be hosting a Middle School Dance, and DJ Smooth will be mixing hit songs for an upbeat song selection.
Sylvia Chapman, Downtown Manager, said “This is a really good opportunity for parents with middle school aged children to come down to the square and be apart of one of the famous middle school dances. Normally, when the dances are held at the Middle School, parents aren’t allowed to attend, but this dance is special, and parents are encouraged to come.”
The street dance isn’t just for the youngsters! Starting at 9:00 p.m. some good ol’ blues will flow through the square, providing adults with the rhythms to dance the night away. The Blues Brothers and Sisters along with Randolf Walker, and his new band, will groove the night away with soulful blues and classic oldies.
“The street dance isn’t just for the younger crowd! We want everyone to come out and dance!” Chapman stated. “The Street Dance is for everyone in the community to come out and have some fun!”
Papa John’s will be on the square selling pizza, ULMS will provide drinks, and patrons can also purchase cotton candy, candy apples and hot dogs.
“The main idea behind the Street Dance is to promote Georgia Cities Week. Georgia’s Cities Week encourages citizens to come together and do activities, clean up and make their city shine,” said Chapman.
“It’s all about being proud of your city! Whether you pick up trash in the street, paint a cracking building, cut back overgrown bushes or just cut your grass, you’re helping Thomaston shine! It’s spring cleaning for the whole city of Thomaston.”
The Street Dance is just one of the events that the city of Thomaston has scheduled for “Let’s Make Thomaston Shine” week. There will be clean ups, coloring contests, festivals, essay contests, the downtown yard sale and open houses.
