Upson-Lee High School artists were celebrated at the ULHS Reception in the Art Gallery at the Thomaston-Upson Arts Council on March 27. Students, parents, siblings, members of the community and TUAC representatives walked the gallery in admiration of Mrs. Hope Austin’s students’ art work. Students were allowed to submit pieces for the gallery from drawing, painting, pottery and crafts, and visual arts classes. Among several of the water color, egg tempera, scratch relief, pencil drawings and still lifes, a handful of pieces stood out, indicating the possibility of a few aspiring professional artist.s Mrs. Austin said, “Art class may be the fun class in high school to take, but you can clearly see which students use the art medium as expression. Some of the pieces we have are extraordinary and some are simple. All in all, every student who submitted art work should be proud of their accomplishments.” One student who attended the reception, Misty Raines, said, “I love taking art, and Mrs. Austin has inspired me to major in Art Education when I go to college.” Mrs. Austin said of the compliment, “It’s so rewarding to be an inspiration to one of my students. It’s really kind of hard to believe.” After refreshments and chit chat, TUAC’s Fawn DeRosia, who put together the event, and Mrs. Austin retired to talking about highschool and the differences of generations.
