2007 Memorial Tournament

Managing Editor

The Thomaston Sertoma Club has begun its initial planning for the 2007 Rob Bennett Memorial Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Oct. 19 at Raintree Golf Club.

Named in memory of a Sertoman who met a tragic death one month after being sworn in as Secretary in 2004, the tournament has netted over $26,000 in the first three years.

“All the money stays right here in our own community,” says current Sertoma President Danny Tate. “We contribute part of the proceeds to the local Boy Scout Troops. Rob was an Eagle Scout, and we also support the Flint River Area Auburn Club Rob Bennett Scholarship Fund. Since a major emphasis of Sertoma International is in the area of speech, hearing and language, our club has partnered with the Thomaston-Upson School System's Special Education Department for many years, providing well over $50,000 in materials and equipment they otherwise would not have had. Our club also established a Speech/Hearing/ Language Scholarship Fund in 2006, which continues to grow.”

Sponsorships for the tournament range from $150 to $1,000. The field is limited to the first 104 golfers, and several teams were turned away last year. Presently there are a few spots left.

The entry fee is $60 or $240 per team, which includes lunch, golf cart, on-course beverages and a 19th tee social after the tournament.

Entry forms are available at Raintree Golf Club in Thomaston, The Cedars in Zebulon and the downtown United Bank.
