Funeral services for Mr. Cyrus Milton Neuner of Barnesville will be held Thursday, July 13, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the Barnesville First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jay Tenney and the Rev. Hamp Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Neuner died Sunday, July 9, 2006, in an Atlanta healthcare facility from the results of a massive stroke suffered on July 8, 2006.
Williams Funeral Home of Barnesville is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Neuner was a lifelong resident of Lamar County. He was the son of the late Mr. Samuel Burr Neuner and the late Mrs. Nellie Estelle Dumas Neuner. He was born in the Redbone Community in Lamar County and raised in Barnesville. He graduated from Gordon Military High School in 1937, and Gordon Military College in 1939. Upon graduation from Gordon Military College, Cyrus earned his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He continued his education at Georgia Tech, completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1942. He then entered the Army Air Corp, where he served in North Africa, the Middle East and Italy for two and a half years during WWII. After three and a half years active service, he remained in the Air Force Reserves for the next 16 and a half years, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Cyrus spent his entire 41-year working career with General Tire at their Aldora Mills Plant in Barnesville. He was promoted to plant manager at the age of 28 and remained in that position until he retired. During this time he was very active with the Georgia Textile Manufacturers Association.
Cyrus served as a Barnesville city councilman for 31 years, was chairman of the board of the First National Bank for 23 years, served in many capacities as a member of the First United Methodist Church, and actively supported the Boy Scouts. He also served as a member of the Gordon College Foundation.
When Jimmy Carter was Governor of Georgia he appointed Cyrus to several commissions, two of which were the State Personnel Board and the Judicial Nominating Commission.
Survivors include his wife, Mary “Kebie” Scott Neuner of Barnesville; sons, Sam (Joyce) Neuner of Cumming and Don (Karen) Neuner of Fayetteville; a daughter, Sandra Carter of Lilburn; a sister, Dorothy Neuner Sappington of Taylor, S.C.; grandchildren, Marelle (Bruce) Bowers of Chatsworth, Scott (Paula) Carter of El Segundo, Calif., Perri Nuener of Cumming and Patrick Neuner of Fayetteville; and great-grandchildren, Cyrus Bowers, Carter Bowers, Conner Carter and Emma Bowers.
Visitation will be held this evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
