Worthy remembered with tree

The Thomaston Tree Board planted a Shumard Oak Thursday in front of the Thomaston-Upson Government Complex in memory of Sharon Elaine Worthy.

"We dedicate and plant an oak tree in memory of Sharon," said Mayor Hays Arnold during the Arbor Day Proclamation.

"We have chosen this building for the planting of the tree, because of Sharon's long history and dedication to the city of Thomaston," said Arbor Day Chairman Janie Coggins.

Coggins spoke of how happy and popular Sharon was and how she just enjoyed life.

"She was a person who always had a smile and a laugh to share," said Coggins. "She was universally liked and respected."

Sharon worked for the City of Thomaston for 16 years, and was recognized for her commitment in 2000 as the city's Employee of the Year.

"She tried to help co-workers and volunteer groups in any way she could," said Coggins.

She was appointed Public Works Director in January of 2003, where she worked close to the Tree Board.

"She attended all of our meetings each month," said Coggins.

Sharon's parents and sister attended the event as well as many city workers and representatives.

"All who knew Sharon will tell you that she is sorely missed," said Coggins. "Her laugh and her smile will always be with us."
