Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004.

Mr. Smith was born in Thomaston April 23, 1924. He graduated from Robert E. Lee Institute in 1941. He attended Virginia Military Institute prior to serving in World War II and graduated after the war from Georgia Tech as a civil engineer. He was married to his high school sweetheart Lurline Turner Smith for 58 years. Mr. Smith served with the U.S. Army. 104th Infantry Div., receiving a Battlefield Commission in France. A Purple Heart recipient, he attained the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.
A general contractor and developer in the Atlanta area, he was active in a number of civic and community organizations. He rose through the ranks of the Kiwanis International to serve as its International President during 1979 through 1980. Mr. Smith was a life long golfer and member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Leila (Dick) Doll of Victor, N.Y.; a son and daughter-in-law, Angie (Mark) A. Smith III of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Alan Smith, Angelynn Doll and DJ Doll.
In lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made to the Kiwanis International Foundation Childrens Fund, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
