Funeral services for Mrs. John D. Roan, 86, of Concord, were held Sunday, May 11, 2003 at 3 p.m. at the Concord First Baptist Church with the Revs. Doug Ledford, Bob McCombs and Billy Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Roan died Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Pike Manor.

Conner-Westbury Funeral Home of Griffin was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Roan was born in Faulkville, Ala. on March 3, 1917 to the late Asa Brindley Murphree and the late Nannie Mae Baine Murphree. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John D. Roan Sr. who passed away in 1993 and her son-in-law, Jon Goldman, who passed away in 1998. Mrs. Roan was a member of the Concord Baptist Church, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Retired Teachers Association. She taught English at Concord High School from 1941 to 1959, from 1959 to 1979 she taught reading and speech at Naples High School in Naples, Fla. After her retirement in 1979 she resumed her teaching career in Naples, Fla. from 1980 to 1990 teaching English as a second language at Napels High School, before returning to Concord, Ga.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Glenda Roan Goldman of Concord; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. John D. and Chris Roan, Jr. of Valdosta; grandchildren, Stacey and Keith Jackson of Concord, Deidre and Scott Holliday of Zebulon, Tiffany and Keith Robbins of Atlanta, Jessica Roan of Charleston, S.C. and Molly Roan of Valdosta; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Sarah Jackson and Liam Isabella Holliday; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Opal and Clay Oxford of Zebulon and Mitchell Roan of Thomaston; nieces and nephews, Barbara and Kenneth Wright of Conyers, Susan and Walter Smith of Thomaston and Billy and Merrill Roan of Thomaston.
