Gov. Deal appoints native of Thomaston as state Driver Services commissioner
by Submitted

Gov. Nathan Deal recently announced the appointment of Thomaston native Robert G. (Rob) Mikell to Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). Mikell will fill the vacancy left by outgoing Commissioner Greg Dozier, who is being named Assistant Commissioner, Chief of Staff of the Georgia Department of Corrections. Mikell is a 1988 graduate of the R.E. Lee Institute and is the son of Donna Beemon Mikell arid Dr. Joel E. Mikell, MD, both of Thomaston, both deceased.

“Rob has proven himself as a great deputy commissioner for five years, and he’s well-prepared to take on this added responsibility. Congratulations”, said Governor Deal.

Mikell has served as deputy commissioner of the Department of Driver Services since March 2007. Prior to this role, Mikell was the deputy director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, deputy chief assistant solicitor-general for DeKalb County and assistant district attorney for Rockdale County. After earning his law degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law, Mikell practiced at Fain, Major, & Wiley, P.C. in Atlanta for two years. He received his bachelor’s degree in English from The Citadel and his master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University.

He currently serves as president of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) Region II, is a member of the AAMVA International Board of Directors and Chairman of AAMVA International’s Suspended and Revoked Drivers Work group. He is secretary of Georgia Piedmont Technical College’s Law Enforcement Academy Advisory Board and is a member of the State Bar of Georgia. Mikell is a member of First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville’s Board of Trustees. Mikell and his wife, Sherrie, have three children. They reside in Snellville.
