Rate increases now in effect for city residents

City of Thomaston residents can expect to see increases in their electricity and water/sewer rates, beginning with their end of January 2013 bills. The Thomaston City Council in December approved utility rate increases of 35 cents per 1,000 gallons for water and 30 cents for 1,000 gallons of sewage. Based on the average household in the city using about 5,000 gallons per month, the average customer would see an increase of $3.25 per month for water and sewer. The council also included a 5.5 percent rate increase for electrical usage.

At its first meeting in 2013, on Jan. 15, City Clerk Dennis Truitt reminded the council of the rate increases.

“We need to let the community know that the electricity and water/sewer rate increases that were adopted by the council in December did actually go into effect January 1, 2013,” said Truitt. “They will see that on their billing at the end of this month.”

Also during Truitt’s report to the council, he noted that 2013 is a city election year.

“The city election will be held November 5, 2013, for the offices of Mayor Pro Tem and Council Districts 3 and 4, the City Clerk said. “Tonight the council needs to set the qualifying fees. The regulations say that it is three percent of the total gross salary of the preceding year. So therefore, the fees will be $81 to quality for Mayor Pro Tem, and $72 to qualify for Council Districts 3 and 4.”

Council member Jim Richards made a motion to approve the qualifying fees as stated by Truitt. Councll member Patsy Perdue seconded the motion and it was approved, 4-0. Council member Gary Atwater was absent.

Truitt also informed the council that the city has received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the year 2011. Truitt noted that the city has received a Certificate of Achievement for 26 consecutive years.
