LOST mediation going well, says Chairman Raines

Upson County Board of Commissioners Chairman Maurice Raines stated he was very encouraged when it comes to the LOST (Local Option Sales Tax) negotiations with the City of Thomaston and the City of Yatesville after the first mediation meeting held last week. Raines noted during Tuesday’s Board of Commission meeting that the meeting went quite well.

“I am very encouraged and it was a very good mediation meeting,” said Raines. “The city (Thomaston) has put some things on the table for us to look at and we are going to do so. I just wanted to let the community know that it was a very, very positive meeting.”

A Notice of Mediation was filed at the end of August after the three governments failed to come to an agreement with in the 60-day negotiation period. If all three sides cannot come to an agreement within the next 60 days, then the issue will be resolved in Superior Court by a judge located outside the Griffin Judicial Circuit.

Yatesville Mayor Cecil Moncrief said Monday that during the mediation meeting he asked both Upson County and Thomaston representatives if Yatesville can continue to receive its two percent portion of the LOST. He said both sides agreed to that and he believes Yatesville’s participation in the mediation is concluded.

Chairman Raines also reminded the public that the Board of Commissioners will be hosting a Town Hall next Thursday, October 18 to discuss what LOST is and how it is used throughout the community. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
