Civic organizations sponsoring fund raising projects
by Larry Stanford

Fall is the time of year when people give thanks for what they have and start thinking about what they can give to others. That also makes it the ideal time of year for civic organizations to solicit donations through a variety of ways to fund the various civic projects they sponsor. The following are a few of the local fund raisers now going on.

Cake Auction

It’s the 5th Annual Thomaston Rotary Club Silent Cake Auction. The auction will be held on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, November 20th from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Upson Regional Medical Center Auditorium. All desserts are homemade and will be perfect for your Thanksgiving dinner!

Pecan Sales

The Thomaston Kiwanis Club is in the middle of their Second Annual Pecan Sale. One pound bags of shelled pecans, available plain or lightly roasted, are on sale for $10 a bag. They are perfect for cooking or for just eating out of the bag. The pecans are on sale at Thomaston Hardware, or you can call the following Kiwanians for more information on how to pick up a few bags: Linda Hayward – 706-647-9946 or 706-601-7856, Ruth Hatchett – 770-468-6048, or Melvin Fallin at Thomaston Hardware – 706-647-2666.

Gun Raffle

The Thomaston Sertoma Club is sponsoring a Seven-Day Gun Raffle in which a new gun will be raffled off each day for seven days starting December 16 and ending December 22. The guns to be raffled are a Marlin X7 308 Caliber Rifle, a Mossberg 500 12 Gauge Pump Shotgun, a Taurus TCP 380 Handgun, a Taurus Judge Stainless 45/410 Revolver, a Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 380 with Laser, a Rossi Circuit Judge 410/45 Rifle/Shotgun Combo, and a Ruger M77 300 Remington Short Ultra Mag Rifle. Tickets are available from Sertoma Club members for $10 each or three for $20. A total of 1,000 tickets will be sold. Winning numbers will be selected each evening using that day’s Georgia Lottery CASH3 Evening drawing. A winning number can be used more than once if drawn multiple times during the raffle. Winners are responsible for picking up the guns at Northside Pawn. Winners must be able to pass a background check and will be responsible for any fees associated with taking possession of the gun. Winners have the option of receiving 75 percent of the cash value of the gun they win.

Now that’s news I can really use
I have a terrible confession to get off my chest. It is a secret I have tried to hide from family and friends for years. Up to this point, I have been fairly successful in hiding this but I believe the time has come to clear the air. My confession is this, and please do not hate me because of ...
