The 20th annual Upson County Relay for Life will be held this Friday night and Saturday morning at Greatest Generation Memorial Park in Thomaston. In the past 20 years, Upson County has joined together to raise more than $1 million for the American Cancer Society to help people get well, stay well, and fight back.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday night, and ends at 6 a.m. Saturday morning. Relay teams have been formed and will be walking throughout the night to raise money to fight cancer.

The opening ceremony will bring everyone together for a high energy event kickoff to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to inspire hope by sharing recent accomplishments and progress, and to remind everyone that while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority.

The first lap of the walk will be the Survivor’s Lap, with all cancer survivors at the event taking the first lap as they are cheered on by the other participants, celebrating their victory over cancer.

Later on in the evening will be the Luminaria Ceremony in which candles are lit in memory of loved ones who have passed on. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.

There will be music and various activities to take part in during the night, and at 6 a.m. Saturday morning will be the closing ceremony, a time to remember the lives of those lost and to celebrate the commitment, through participation in a Relay event, to fight back against this disease over the next year.
