UCSO named DUI Agency of the Year; three deputies are honored by MADD

The Upson County Sheriff’s Office and three of its deputies have been honored for their dedicated efforts in enforcing DUI laws. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety co-sponsored the 9th Annual Golden Shield Honors in Atlanta on March 28, 2013.

The Upson County Sheriff’s Office was honored as the DUI Agency Hero for 2012. The honor is given each year to the agency with the most DUI arrests among similar-sized agencies statewide. The Sheriff’s Office posted 167 DUI arrests in 2012.

Deputy Justin Hammock was honored with a Silver Pin. Officers who make between 50 and 99 DUI arrests during the year qualify for this honor. Deputy Hammock qualified for the honor by making 62 DUI arrests in 2012.

Deputy Clayton Jones and Sergeant Neill Sanders both received a Bronze Pin. Officers who make between 25 and 49 DUI arrests during the year qualify for this honor. Deputy Jones made 44 DUI arrests, and Sergeant Sanders made 28 DUI arrests in 2012.

This is the third honor for Sergeant Sanders, who received the Bronze Pin for 2010 and for 2011. This marks Deputy Hammock’s second honor. He also received the Bronze Pin for 2011. This is the first honor for Deputy Jones.

“It is a great honor for our agency to receive this award,” said Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore. “I commend Sergeant Sanders, Deputy Hammock and Deputy Jones. Alcohol-related traffic accidents are problematic and pose a serious threat to everyone on the roadway. We have a zero tolerance policy for any driver who is operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. I am very proud of the efforts of these deputies to keep the citizens of our community safe. Upson County is a better place because of their hard work and dedication.”
