Upson County has a new County Manager, with the Board of Commissioners selecting Jim Wheeless to fill the position that has been vacant for the last two months at Tuesday’s meeting. Wheeless, an Upson County native, currently serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs for Savannah Technical College. However, he stated that he is looking forward to coming home.

“Home has always been Thomaston,” said Wheeless in a phone interview Wednesday. “I was up there for Thanksgiving and heard a lot of positive comments from people in the community about the possibility of me being selected. I can’t wait to get started.”

He will not have to wait for long as today marks his last day at Savannah Tech and he will start his new role as County Manager on Monday, December 3.

Wheeless is no stranger to local government, having served on the Board of Commissioners as well as the Upson County Board of Education and then the Thomaston-Upson County Board of Education after the two school systems merged. He also served in numerous positions at Flint River Technical College including adjunct instructor, Director of Operations, Vice President of Student Affairs, Vice President of Academic Affairs and most recently Acting President prior to the merger with Griffin Tech which formed Southern Crescent Technical College.

“I’m very excited about being chosen and am very grateful to the board for having confidence in me to do the job,” said Wheeless. “I am looking forward to working with the department heads and personnel and being responsive to the needs of the community. I feel like this is going to be a good fit and I am looking forward to Monday.”
