Following an investigation by Upson County Animal Control and the Upson County Sheriff’s Department into an apparent case of animal cruelty, one man has been arrested and charged with four counts of animal cruelty.

Agymah Jabari Carter was arrested on Jan. 3 and charged with four counts of animal cruelty regarding pit bulls which may have been used in dog fighting.

According to a report by Upson County Sheriff’s Sergeant Rodney Ozley, he was dispatched on Dec. 22, on a cruelty to animals call to 58 Long Farm Court in Thomaston. When he arrived, he observed 8-10 pit bulls tied up in the backyard, with water, but no food. Ozley advised Animal Control of the situation and was told they would be out in the morning.

On Dec. 23 Sgt. Ozley went back to the location to assist Animal Control. In his report, he stated that Animal Control Director Smart Web, who was on the scene, told him he believed the dogs has possibly been involved in dog fighting, and showed Ozley several dogs with scars on them, and others that were thin and underfed. They also observed a set of hanging scales laying on the living room floor in the house.

Veterinarian Dr. Curtis Crawford arrived to examine the dogs, which were then seized by Animal Control. Two dead dogs were also found on the property.

The owner of the dogs, identified as Agymah Jabari Carter, arrived and said the dogs belonged to a friend, but that he (Carter) had them for a year. The resident of the home, Linda Carter, stated that she lived in the house, but that the dogs were not hers.

All of the dogs have since been euthanized after being found to be too aggressive to be rehabilitated or adopted back out.

The investigation is continuing and more charges could be pending.
