6th grade students could win $100 gift card with essay in “If I Were Mayor…” Contest

The City of Thomaston is now taking entries for its annual “If I Were Mayor” Essay Contest for 6th grade students. The contest is open to all Georgia students, including private school and home schooled students, currently enrolled in good standing in the 6th grade during the 2012-2013 school year.

A $100 gift card will be awarded to the winner and a $50 gift card will be awarded to the runner-up. Winners will be notified by March 4, 2013, and will be invited to read their essays at a Thomaston City Council meeting.

Each essay must include the student’s name and school. The entry form must be included with the essay. Only one essay per student.

Essays must address the subject, with the first sentence beginning with: “If I were Mayor, I would…” Essays must not exceed 350 words.

When writing their essays, students should consider some of the things that mayors can and cannot do. For example, mayors can work with the city council to decide where businesses and housing should go in the city; apply for grants to make parks nicer, roads wider, and sidewalks safer; work with the city council to decide how the city should spend its money; make laws to stop people from littering or speeding; and recommend hiring city employees like police officers, fire fighters, and building inspectors. Mayors cannot build theme parks; make a law that parents can’t make kids eat vegetables; give everyone money, mansions or cars; or fix school lunches.

Essays must be received at Thomaston City Hall by Thursday, February 28, 2013. Official entry forms can be picked up from the City Manager’s Office at the Government Complex, 106 East Lee Street. An entry form is also available on Page 5A in today’s paper.
