Tractor Supply happy with workers found at job fair

When the new Tractor Supply Company store opens on Highway 19 North in Thomaston early next year, staffing it will be employees who were hired from a job fair held at the Thomaston-Upson Civic Center Tuesday and Wednesday. More than 350 people attended the job fair, filling out applications and getting onsite interviews.

Tractor Supply Company was founded in 1938 as a mail order tractor parts business by Charles H. Schmidt of Chicago. Today, Tractor Supply is the largest retail farm and ranch store chain in America, with more than 1,150 stores in 45 states. A one-stop-shop, the store has something for both homeowners and farmers, including feed, fencing, mowers, tools, work clothing and more.

Cory Steele, who will be the Store Manager in Thomaston, said they were looking to fill about 12 positions in their retail store.

“We were expecting somewhere between 200 and 300 to come out,” Steele said. “We’ll probably interview about 350 people. This is a little bit above our expectations, but it is a really nice turnout.”

He added that the Tractor Supply ‘one-stop-shop’ will probably hire everyone they need from this one-stop-job-fair.

“All of those positions will be filled from this job fair,” said Steele. “We’ve gotten some fantastic candidates, that’s for sure. It’s been nice.”

In addition to the Tractor Supply job fair this week, a Georgia Department of Labor spokesperson said Wednesday that the new expanded Kroger store on Highway 19/41 in Griffin will be opening in January and plans to hire up to 180 additional personnel. The new store will be extremely larger than the current Kroger in Griffin. Interested workers can start applying online today, with interviews planned for Nov. 26 through Dec. 15. For more information, contact the Department of Labor office in Griffin at 770-228-7226.
