Quick work by investigators leads to arrest of burglary suspect

Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore praised the work of his investigators in tracking down and arresting a suspect in seven burglaries and one attempted burglary that occurred overnight on Feb. 21-22. David Eugene Vaughn, 45, of Yatesville, was arrested on Feb. 22 and has been charged with seven felony counts of burglary.

The burglaries occurred at Keadle Lumber Company, the Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, St. Peter The Rock Catholic Church, Thomaston Lawn Care, a a residence on Barnesville Highway, and at Faith Baptist Church on Yatesville Highway. An attempted burglary also occurred at Phoenix Rising Event Center.

In all of the incidents, entrance was through breaking a window or prying a door open. In all of them, cabinets and desk drawers were searched, but in the majority of the locations, nothing was taken, and it is believed money was the object of the searches. At the residence, a bicycle that had been inside the house was found down at the end of the driveway. Only at the Rock Hill Fire House was anything actually missing - $20 that had been in a change jar in the front office, and $50 that was in a metal box in the back office.

Sheriff Kilgore said through witness interviews that placed Vaughn in the area of the burglaries, and video surveillance, investigators were able to develop evidence and arrest Vaughn for the burglaries. Vaughn who was already on probation for a separate burglary in Upson County, is also wanted in Florida for a burglary and probation violation.

“I’m really proud of my investigators,” said Kilgore. “They went to work and you can see they worked really hard to solve that and were able to get it pretty quickly solved.”

Vaughn remains in the Upson County Jail on $10,000 bond.
