Upson County formally signed to be part of a joint broadband project at their regular meeting Tuesday night. County IT Director Robert Haney has worked with the project, which includes Upson, Meriwether, Troup and Heard counties, over the past year in a study to determine the need for better broadband coverage for the region. The study is now complete and the counties have formed a joint authority to apply for grants to fund the project.
The letter, which was signed by the Board of Commissioners, states that Upson County is committed to being a part of the project. Haney also noted the $12,500 that is mentioned in the letter will not have to be covered by the county; the cost will be passed along to the company who is contracted to do the work.
Kyle Fletcher, Executive Director of the Thomaston-Upson Industrial Development Authority told the board that the local industries are very excited about the project and she feels that it will serve as a great recruitment tool for future industries.
