New P&Z Director Doug Currier says department in good shape

It has been about three months since Doug Currier began his job of new Planning and Zoning Director for Upson County and while he is still getting adjusted to things, he feels things have been going very well.

“I think I’m still in the honeymoon phase of things,” said Currier with a laugh, “but in all seriousness, things have been going good. I’ve been getting to know everyone and have had started to build up to having frank discussions with some of them, which has been helpful.”

Currier noted that he has been pleasantly surprised to find the Building and Zoning Department in as good of shape as it was since it has been without a director for at least nine out of the last 12 months.

“Everyone here knows what they are doing,” he said. “What I’m working on right now is getting the forms and processes updated.”

Currier has held several positions similar to this throughout his career and feels his previous experience will be a big help when it comes to getting the job done. Former County Manager Kyle Hood, who was involved in the search for a new director, agreed that Currier looks to be a great asset to the department.

“Doug brings a wealth of experience and a very good attitude into a position that is vitally important to continue the progress that has been made in a department that was underutilized for so many years,” said Hood. “He was one of our top candidates from the very beginning and we are very glad to have him one board.”

Georgia marks the third state Currier has worked in during his professional career, but being that his father was in the Coast Guard, it is the ninth state he has lived in throughout his life and he hopes it will be the last for quite some time.
