A Minnesota woman is in the Upson County Jail after raising suspicion while driving an RV through the WalMart parking lot on July 7. According to a report by Thomaston Police Officer Johnny Middlebrooks, he and another officer responded to a call of suspicious activity in the parking lot. When they arrived, they observed the driver of the RV taking photos of the license plates of other vehicles while parked in two spaces reserved for handicapped drivers.
The officers ran the license plate of the RV, a 1993 Gulfstream Conquest, through GCIC and the State of Minnesota, and found it not on file. When they questioned the driver, identified as Kellie Sue Higgins, 48, of Finlayson, MN, she gave them a Minnesota driver’s license and the title of the RV. The title corresponded to a different license plate, which had been reported stolen from Hinckley, MN.
Higgins said she was disabled, but did not have a handicap parking permit. According to the report, she could not give coherent answers as to why she was in Thomaston. She allegedly told the officers she had an apartment lined up in Hapeville, and was looking for an apartment in Thomaston, out of the county. She allegedly said she had been at Six Flags Amusement Park in Birmingham, AL, the day before. When told that Six Flags is in Georgia and not Alabama, she continued to state it was in Alabama.
She told the officers she had not been drinking or on drugs. She consented to a roadside test for drugs conducted by Officer Middlebrooks. The results of the test led the officer to believe she was under the influence of drugs and she was arrested. She was transported to Upson Regional Medical Center for drug testing, then transported to the Upson County Jail. Higgins has been charged with DUI – Drugs, felony theft by receiving property stolen in another state, and felony theft by bringing stolen property into the state.
A Thomaston man is facing a multitude of charges, including DUI, follow a chase on July 3. According to report by Upson County Deputy Kody Kennedy, he was patrolling on Highway 19 South near McCorkle Road when he observed a tan Chevrolet S10 pickup truck traveling north on Highway 19 at a high rate of speed. Kennedy’s radar clocked the vehicle at 93 miles per hour. Attempting to stop the vehicle, he chased it as it turned first onto Apple Road, then onto McCorkle Road. The truck stopped in a driveway and the driver fled around back of the house. Kennedy gave chase and captured the driver, identified as Jeremy Lynn Perry, 33. Perry refused to take a alco-sensor test, and was taken to the Upson County Jail and given a breathalyzer test. He has been charged with DUI, speeding, aggressive driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.
Another Thomaston man is also facing DUI charges after police observed him driving the wrong way on a one way street. According to the report by Dep. Kennedy, on July 7 he saw a silver 2001 Lincoln Town Car traveling the wrong way on Walton Street, a one way road, near Raines Street. Stopping the vehicle, he gave the driver, identified as Desmond Deion Terry, 29, an alco-sensor test which showed him positive for alcohol. He was arrested and taken to the Upson County Jail. Terry has been charged with DUI, driving the wrong way on a one way street, and driving without a license.
