The Thomaston City Council held a called meeting on Tuesday, July 24, in the city meeting room in the basement of the government complex. The meeting was called in order to handle business originally planned for the council’s July 17 meeting, which was postponed due to lack of a quorum. Mayor Pro Tem Doug Head was absent.
City Manager Patrick Comiskey requested approval of authorization for the City Manager to spend up to $90,000 to replace or repair the sewer line on Barron Avenue. Comiskey stated he did not believe it would cost that much.
“The plan right now is to replace the manhole on Barron. That repair and the ensuing repairs around it, we are expecting to be less than $20,000,” said Comiskey. “Then we’re going to see how that holds and investigate things from there. I don’t expect it to be anywhere near $90,000, but if we get into it and find that we have to, we may get into more. But right now, it should be significantly less than that.”
Council member Gary Atwater made a motion authorizing the City Manager to spend up to $90,000 for the repairs. Council member Jim Phillips seconded the motion and it was approve, 4-0.
Council member Wallace Rhodes commended Comiskey on his work with the city’s infrastructure.
“Our City Manager has worked diligently to upgrade our water and sewer lines in this community, and I think we need to support him in every way that we can, so that this job will eventually be completed to our satisfaction.”
In other business, Comiskey requested authorization for the City Manager to expend up to $60,000 to pave sections of Springdale Road.
“The sections we’re looking at are to do from the intersection of Springdale and Magnolia, heading south up to 19, and then starting again at a point about 600 feet north of the intersection centerline of Magnolia, where it runs into Springdale and going north to the northern entrance of Springdale,” said Comiskey. “We’ll leave a section there between the intersection and the northern section in order to put a French drain system in.”
Comiskey said they expect the price to actually be less than $45,000. He added they hope to start paving by next week.
Council member Rhodes made a motion authorizing City Manager to do the paving on Springdale Road as he recommended. Council member Atwater seconded the motion and it was approved, 4-0.
The council also approved the reappointment of Mary Tate to the Thomaston-Upson Library Board.
