A chase that started in Barnesville ended in Yatesville early Sunday morning when the fleeing driver lost control of his car on a curve on Logtown Road and went off the road, rolling numerous times and injuring himself and two passengers. The driver and one passenger were transported by air ambulance to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, and the second passenger was taken to Upson Regional Medical Center for treatment.

According to Major Leslie Holmes of the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began about 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning when deputies were conducting a license checkpoint on Veterans Parkway (Hwy. 41) at Grove Street. A 2006 Nissan Maxima southbound on Veterans Parkway approached the checkpoint, but the driver refused to obey commands to stop and sped through the checkpoint, nearly hitting one officer.

A deputy gave chase and followed the Maxima southbound on Veterans Parkway. The suspect turned east onto Barnesville Yatesville Road, and the chase continued on into Upson County at high speeds. The suspect crossed Hwy. 74 in downtown Yatesville onto Logtown Road. While attempting to negotiate a curve just past Pleasant Grove Road, he lost control.

According to a report from the Georgia State Patrol, the vehicle spun out and went off the road, overturning for 47 feet, striking a fence on the passenger side, then continued rolling another 41 feet before striking a utility pole on the driver’s side and coming to a rest.

The driver, identified as Martez D. Terry, 28, of Thomaston, and one passenger, identified as Billtavis Javan Raines, 24, of Yatesville, were seriously injured. Two air ambulances landed in the parking lot of the Yatesville Fire Department to transport Terry and Raines to the Medical Center of Central Georgia. A second passenger, identified as Alton Limahl Trayler, 24, of Thomaston, was transported by ambulance to Upson Regional Medical Center. Their conditions are not known at this time, but were not believed to be life-threatening.

Terry is facing charges from both Lamar County and the Georgia State Patrol. The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office is charging him with felony Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, felony Reckless Driving, and three misdemeanors, Weaving over the Roadway, Driving with a Suspended License, and Speeding. The State Patrol is charging him with Driving Too Fast for Conditions, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving with a Suspended License, and Driving Under the Influence.
