Westmoreland, others talk about 2nd Amendment at Day of Resistance Rally at Bickley’s Lake

Saturday, Feb. 23, branches of the Tea Party held “Day of Resistance” rallies across the nation. The cold and rain couldn’t hold back Thomaston’s Tea Party, which held their rally at Bickley’s Lake at 1p.m.

Speakers at the event included 3rd District Congressman Lynn Westmoreland; Upson County Sheriff Dan Kilgore and Lamar County Sheriff Brad White; and Ray McBerry, who in 2010 ran for the Governor’s seat and is a major voice for state’s rights and the 10th amendment. The Tyler Hammond Band played between speakers.

The clear message of the rally was to defend the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security to the national security of a free State, the right of the people to bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

With a recent rise of mass shootings with assault rifles across the nation and high death counts because of high capacity ammunition magazines, the Obama administration has set forth an agenda to place bans on these assault rifles and high capacity magazines. This has caused an uptick in arms and ammunition sales across the country, along with rallies being held to stop the President’s agenda.

Rep. Westmoreland said at the rally that he will be introducing a bill to help combat gun violence. The bill will require background checks on all firearm sales, but instead of ending the sale of high capacity magazines, those that purchase magazines that hold thirty rounds or more will be added to a FBI counter-terrorist watch list.

Ray McBerry said it is important to make a stand at the local level.

“The day when Federal agents cross county lines to take away citizens’ firearms, it should be the duty of the Sheriff to place those agents into custody and escort them to county jails,” McBerry said. “We are seeing a growth of National Socialism in America. They haven’t even changed the script; they haven’t even changed the words. America’s greatest enemy is the Federal government.”

Attendants at the “Day of Resistance” rally enjoyed music, speeches, food, and fellowship with each other. They were invited to join the John Birch Society.
