The Junior Varsity basketball teams at Upson-Lee High School, both boys and girls, are still undefeated on the 2007-08 season. The girls sport a mark of 6-0, while the boys have a record of 7-0.
The Lady Knights most recently topped Crawford County on Saturday by a score of 47-22. Upson-Lee took control of the game in its early moments and held Crawford to only 11 first-half points. UL’s Jarrica Ellerbee nearly scored that herself in the first half with 10 points while her team totalled 24 in the half.
Ellerbee led the team with 14 points in the win while Marvette Wilkerson scored nine and Takenya Daniel added seven.
Last Friday the Lady Knights picked up a win over a top-notch opponent in Jones County. The game started very tight but Upson-Lee outscored JC 11-3 in the second quarter to take a 15-7 halftime lead.
An even stronger third quarter charge was led by Marvette Wilkerson and her seven points. The Lady Knights held on for the 37-24 victory.
Wilkerson led the team with 12 points while Triona Webb added seven points.
The boys’ JV team defeated Westside this Tuesday night in Macon. The game was very tight quarter-to-quarter, but Upson-Lee had a slight edge in the 52-39 win.
Quinten Howell led the team with 17 points in the win and scored when his team needed it most. He had seven points in the first quarter to go along with eight in the fourth quarter. Jordan Gaines followed with 12 points.
The Knights picked up a dominant win over non-region opponent Crawford County on Saturday by a score of 78-49.
Quinten Howell came out of the locker room firing and hit three three-pointers in the opening quarter. His 11 first-quarter points propelled his team to a 27-9 lead at the end of one.
Howell then scored seven points in the second quarter to increase the lead to 49-23 at halftime. Crawford made a slight comeback in the third quarter but Howell was unleashed again in the fourth, scoring nine more points to assure the big win.
Howell led the team with 27 points in the win, followed by Antonio Copeland, Jordan Gaines and Tae Matthews with seven points each. Fourteen players on the JV’s 15-man roster scored at least two points in the game.
The young Knights topped Jones County last Friday on the road by a score of 52-39. Another dominant first-quarter performance gave Upson-Lee a big head start. The Knights outscored the Greyhounds 20-3 in the opening period.
Quinten Howell led the team through the trying third quarter with nine points and Jones County went cold late in the game offensively.
Howell again led the team in scoring with 21 points. He was followed by Martavius Leonard with nine points and Antonio Copeland with eight points.
Upson-Lee’s Junior Varsity teams will play their last game of the first half of the season tomorrow afternoon in Forsyth against Mary Persons. Games start at 3:00 p.m.
