The briefcase ain’t heavy

I’m stoked. It’s football season again!

Of course, that also means that it’s time to go to court. Everywhere in the circuit. All at the same time.

Okay, I’m exaggerating a little bit. But, when I stop and consider all that the staff is juggling, it amazes me that they can do it.

I try to cover Upson and Pike Counties with two prosecutors. Look what is on tap for them this month. On Tuesday of last week we had arraignments in Pike and hearings in Upson at the same time. On Thursday we had hearings in Pike. On Friday we again had hearings in Pike and motions in front of another judge in Upson.

The following Monday we had 56 cases to present to the grand jury in Upson and jury trials scheduled for two judges (there is only one courtroom). The next week Upson will have jury trials with another judge and, two weeks later, trials all week with the fourth judge.

Meanwhile, in Fayette we have more prosecutors. It’s a good thing. On the week of September 10 we have jury trials with two judges all week. At least we have multiple courtrooms. On Wednesday of that week, in addition to two trials, we’ll have grand jury and a third judge will hold criminal motions hearings in Fayette.

The next week Fayette has two more judges trying cases all week. The next week there will be trials in two other Fayette courtrooms.

In October we get slammed with similar schedules in Pike and Spalding.

As you can see, we’ve got a lot of the Lord’s work to do in the coming weeks.

It reminds me of what Herschel Walker said when he was a running back for the University of Georgia in the early 1980’s. A reporter asked him if he got tired when he carried the ball forty or more times each game.

“Nah,” he answered. “The ball ain’t heavy.”

So, I guess I should say, “The briefcase ain’t heavy.”

But, sometimes it is.
