Last February the Knights season came to an end in the first round of the state playoffs in Brunswick, Ga. The Glynn Academy Red Terrors ended the Knights’ hopes of a deep playoff run with a 71-49 victory.

Gone are All-Region players Jamarcus Lary (Gordon College, Barnesville, Ga) and Micktavious Holt ( St. Johns Community College, Palatka, FL) who anchored the Knights in the post, which according to Head Coach Darrel Lockhart is a concern this season.

“We are going to need some young guys step up for us down low,” said Lockhart. “I am excited about our team, we have great speed, quickness, and have been playing very aggressive over the summer and in our scrimmage game against Newnan earlier this week. Last season Newnan advanced to the Final Four in AAAAA”

The Knights strength this season will almost certainly come from the back court. Returning are players, Quent Howell, Tay Matthews, A.C. Copeland, and Donterrius Harris. Taygo Howell and Jacarus Carthon, who according to Lockhart had great summer workouts, will also see playing time.

Carthon (6’3”) is able to play to post position and get out quickly on the breaks, which Lockhart says will be key to this teams success.

“We want to pressure the ball full court on defense, and get up and down the floor on offense. We definitely want a fast paced game. With our guard play, that should work to our advantage.”

Also in the post this season will be Creon Baker and Zack Beckham, who Lockhart say brings a physical aspect to the team. He expects seniors A.C. Copeland and Donterrius Harris to be his leaders on and off the court.

The Knights will see some new faces this year, as neighboring Taylor County and Manchester have been added to the schedule, along with Lamar County and Pike County, who the Knights seemingly play every year.

This season the Knights will host their own Christmas Tournament on Dec. 28-29. Teams that will be in action include, Mays (Atlanta) , Banneker (College Park), and Lee County.

The season begins in Butler on Nov. 27 against Taylor County.
