First of all, let me say thank you to Joey “Big Steel” Roberts for inviting me to cover some of the greatest wrestling legends from this area and beyond.
I must admit, when I heard there was going to be a wrestling show in Thomaston, I was not overwhelmed. However, after talking with Big Steel and finding out who all was going to be at the event, I was extremely excited. The event itself was better than anything I could have expected. Sitting and chatting in the back with all of the wrestlers was one of the best experiences I have had since taking this job over four years ago.
The Civic Center was packed out! I am not sure how many people showed up, but when I pulled up about 45 minutes before bell time, there was a line out to the parking lot.
Some of the wrestlers which I spoke with included Robert Gibson from the Rock N’ Roll Express. I used to watch them growing up as a child, and he was just a pleasure to chat with. I also saw Mr. Wrestling #2, who is a legend that was before my time, but from the looks of everyone surrounding him in the back for photos, he was definitely a fan favorite.
I got to chat with some “Russian” wrestlers, who told me that the turnout for the show was one of the best they have seen at any venue in years. I also spoke with Glacier, who was a regular on Monday Night Nitro back in the WCW days. Other wrestlers who I got to know just a little bit included “Wildfire” Tommy Rich, “Cowboy” Ron Bass, Chick Donovan (who is in unbelievable shape for his age) Big Steel’s tag team partner Truck:30, and Georgia Indie wrestling star J-Rod.
Overall it was a long night, but an awesome night. So, once again, thanks Big Steel. I hope you guys put on another show in the area sometime soon.
