The Lady Knights took to the hardwood against the Lady Grangers from LaGrange High School last night, but the results of the scrimmage game were not available by press time.
The Lady Knights will see many new teams in the upcoming season, under new head coach Bart Phillips. The Lady Knights return five seniors from a season ago, and welcome a senior transfer to the team. The Lady Knights will face off with some stiff competition in 2012-13, including the Lady Cardinals from Jonesboro High School. Jonesboro advanced to the Final Four of the State Playoffs last season. Woodland, Mary Persons, and Taylor County are other teams the Lady Knights will see this season which advanced to the State Playoffs last season.
“The girls have been working hard,” said Phillips. “We are excited to get the season under way. I really think we will compete game in and game out this season. We have a long way to go to be where we need to be, but I feel we are getting better everyday.”
Upson-Lee returns their leading scorer from a season ago, in senior Jasmine Davis. The Lady Knights also return the team leader in assists and steals, with senior Demeshia Russell. Junior Ke’Ondra Ausbrooks also returns this season. Ausbrooks was one of the team leaders in rebounds and blocked shots. New to the Lady Knights program this season, is guard Tykeela Gray. The 5’8” guard transferred to Upson-Lee from Creekside High School, and is expected to make an immediate impact on this year’s squad.
The Lady Knights will play their first regular season game on Nov. 23, when they play host to the Lady Vikings from Taylor County High School. Last season the Lady Vikings advanced to the Final of the State Playoffs with a 26-2 record. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
