Upson-Lee Football had a great showing at the East-West All-Star Football Game in Macon on Saturday afternoon. Upson-Lee’s Cornell Harris III (LB), Ben Barber (TE), and Corey Moss (QB) all participated in the game, while head coach Tommy Watson was chosen to be the Offensive Line Coach for the West All-Stars.
High school football fans from across the state came in droves to the Ed Defore Sports Complex to watch some of the best senior football players in the state battle one last time on the high school level. The East boasted players from Jones County all the way to Savannah, and the West consisted of players from Macon all the way to Columbus, including the three Knights from Upson-Lee. In the end, the East held off a late rally from Upson-Lee’s Corey Moss and the West All-Stars, earning a 19-15 victory. The East have won the game two years in a row, after winning last season on a last play Hail Mary to defeat the West.
“The guys played so well out there,” said Upson-Lee head coach Tommy Watson. “They are three of the best young men I have ever been around, and they deserved to be out there with the best in the state. The future is very bright for those three young men.”
Tight-end Ben Barber (6’5, 225 pounds) was the only player from Upson-Lee to start in the contest. Barber started at the tight-end position and also started on the kick return team.
Upson-Lee’s Cornell Harris III (6’, 205) racked up four tackles from his middle linebacker position and also recovered a fumble which led to points for the West All-Stars.
Upson-Lee quarterback Corey Moss (6’1, 170) did not start the game for the West All-Stars, but did lead the West All-Stars to their only two touchdown scoring drives of the game, including on on which he scored in the fourth quarter with a one yard TD run.
The West All-Stars, who trailed 13-3 at halftime, played Darren Tucker (6’3, 220) from Rutland High School at the quarterback position for much of the first half. Tucker, who has offers from Middle Tennessee State, Wofford, and Albany State, struggled with a fumble and interception thrown.
In the second half of the game is when Moss took the majority of the snaps for the West All-Stars. Late in the fourth quarter, after Moss led the West to their first touchdown drive, fans from the stands began to chant “We Want Corey” from the west end of the stadium. The fans chanting were not just from Upson-Lee, but they were fans from many different schools which had players on the West team.
The West All-Stars coaching staff put Moss back in the game, and he promptly led them down the field on a 72-yard scoring drive, capped off by Moss’ one yard TD run. The West tried an on-side kick, but failed. The East ran out the clock, earning the 19-15 victory.
