Just a season ago, the Knights played the Harris County Tigers on Halloween weekend, suffering a tough 14-7 loss, this year on Halloween Eve, the Knights suffered an even tougher loss. With nine seconds remaining in the ball game, and trailing 20-13, the Harris County Tigers scored on quarterback keeper from one yard away to escape Thomaston with a 21-20 victory.
The Tigers marched down the field with their triple option offense to score on their first possession of the game, as Calvin Franklin reached the end zone from four yards out, capping off an eight play 67 yard drive. After the PAT was good, the Tigers were quickly out to a 7-0 lead.
The Knight answered back on their next possession, driving 64 yards in only six plays. Big plays on the drive included a completion from Tay Matthews to Logan Winkles and some nice runs by Matthews and Melvin Ferguson. Scoring the touchdown was Montavious Skelton from five yards out. With 3:45 remaining in the opening quarter Luke Paul’s PAT was good, and the game was tied at 7-7.
On the Tigers next possession, the Knights cashed in on a Harris County fumble by their quarterback Tay Buggs. The Knights recovered the fumble on their own 35 yard line. From that point the Knights mounted a huge 16 play 65 yard drive, capped off by a Melvin Ferguson one yard touchdown run. Paul’s PAT was good and the Knights led 14-7 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.
The Tigers struck quickly on the next drive. Again Calvin Franklin did the damage, this time in the form of a 45 yard touchdown run. The Tigers converted their PAT and the game was all tied 14-14 at the half.
The Knights defense stepped up in the second half, limiting the dangerous Sean Jeppesen and Tay Buggs for most of the second half of the game.
The Knights would retake the lead in the third quarter when Donterrius Harris scampered into the end zone from four yards out. The very next play would be the eventual demise of the Knights.
After the score luke Paul’s PAT sailed wide right. The Knights lead was six as they led 20-14 heading into the fourth and final quarter of action.
Both teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter, as neither team’s stingy defense would allow much ball movement. With five minutes remaining, the Tiger took over from the Upson-Lee 34 yard line, and begin to mount what would be the winning drive.
Fifteen plays and 65 yards later, the Tigers found themselves with no timeouts and facing a fouth down and goal situation from the UL one yard line. As time ran out, Tay Buggs scored from one yard away with only nine seconds remaining. The TD was somewhat controversial, as the side judge never signaled that the Tigers scored. The back judge rushed in to signal the touchdown was good and the Tigers escaped with a one point victory after the game winning extra point sailed through the goal posts.
