With the Knights’ first full practice in pads just a little over three weeks away, they have already begun working their perimeter offense and defense in 7 vs. 7 passing games. The Knights have faced off with Manchester, Peach County, and Westside-Macon so far this summer, with more games still to come.

The Knights are working many different players at many different positions, searching for starters for the upcoming season. The Knights have showcased Corey Moss at wide out and safety, along with playing his quarterback position as he did last season. The Knights are also getting plenty of reps from junior back up quarterback Justin Shaw, who really impressed in the Knights Spring Game a couple of months ago. Senior Travis Pittman (6’2”, 195 pounds) has looked stellar at wide receiver and safety, while other seniors Marcus Bussey, Cornell Harris, and Nick Kennedy have shown major improvements from their linebacker positions.

“It’s fun to go out there and see how you compare to other teams during the summer,” said Head Coach Tommy Watson. “We have done some nice things out there so far, but we still have a very long way to go, just as most teams do during the summer. Our kids are excited, and really looking forward to Aug. 31, when we will travel north a few minutes to take on Pike County to open our season.”

The Knights return several key players on the offensive line, defensive line, backfield, linebacking corps, and special teams. However, the secondary has been a concern, with the Knights losing all four starters from the secondary in 2011. Corey Moss, Justin Shaw, Travis Pittman, Kelton Raines, Caleb Allen, and Sontrell Perry are all stepping up this summer in a group effort to fill the holes left by graduating seniors from a year ago.

The Knights have been working out three to four days a week, preparing for August 1 when full pad practices are allowed to start. Upson-Lee will host Westside-Macon in a passing game on Wednesday of next week. The Knights will face off once again with Lamar County in their scrimmage game before the season starts. The game will take place in Barnesville this year on Aug. 17, two weeks before the Knights’ season opener.
