The Heart 2 Heart Quilt project organized by the Upson-Lee High School Beta Club held its first display of the donated quilt squares at Matthews Field Wednesday afternoon. The project is a way for the club to raise money for local and national charities while promoting a positive image for the community. For a $10 donation, a person, family or business could purchase a square, decorate it, and return it to be used as part of a giant quilt. Many of the squares were decorated in memory of family members or loved ones. Tencate donated the 3-foot by 3-foot cloth squares. Beta Club sponsor Jessica Watson said more than 260 squares were purchased, raising more than $3,500. Those funds were divided and given to Relay for Life, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and SUPPORT. Watson said 210 of the squares were returned to be used for the quilt, and were laid out in sets of four. The first photo shows all of the squares placed together on Matthews Field. Some of the bigger squares were used to remember students and faculty members who have passed away. The second photo shows a square made in memory of student Vincent Green, who would have graduated in the Class of 2013, and a larger square signed by class members. The Beta Club plans to continue the Heart 2 Heart Quilt project each year, forming a larger and larger quilt until it covers the entire football field.
