Upson County Probate Judge Danielle McRae defeated challenger Marc Ellington in a runoff election Tuesday, 2,053 to 1,987, a difference of 66 votes, while Ralph Ellington beat Joel Pitts in a special election runoff for the District 3 Board of Commissioners post.
McRae thanked everyone who supported her quest to remain Probate Judge.
“I would like to thank the people of Upson County for supporting me and believing that I am the best suited to continue to be your Probate Judge,” McRae said. “I want to thank the people that helped me with the day to day tasks of running for this office. It is no easy feat and takes an army to get done. I thank my husband, family, and friends for the long hours they put into this. I also want to thank Larry Dawson and Joey Thiel for giving me their support. Most of all, I thank God for giving me the strength, knowledge, will power, and drive to achieve my goals. This is truly a blessing. I believe everything happens for a reason and this is where I was meant to be. I have been preparing for this role for several years and I am eager to really get down to business. I have accomplished so much in the short time that I have been here and I am excited to continue to move the Probate Court forward. I am excited and look forward to working with the citizens of Upson County for many years to come. Thank you!”
In the Upson County Probate Judge race in the primary election July 31, incumbent McRae and lead challenger Ellington were virtually neck-and-neck, with McRae ahead by only 54 votes and taking 40.95 percent to Ellington’s 40.16 percent. In the runoff Tuesday, the race was almost as close, 2,053 to 1,987, with McRae winning by 66 votes and 50.82 percent to Ellington’s 49.18 percent.
McRae won six of the nine precincts, taking Redbone: 540-507, Atwater: 198-154, The Jug: 66-51, Lincoln Park: 58-52, The Rock: 50-47, and Reeves: 251-206. Ellington won Town: 804-771, Salem: 62-25, and Yatesville: 104-94. A total of 4,040 voters, or 24.7 percent of the registered voters, cast ballots.
In the special election for District 3 Commissioner, the margin of victory was a little bit wider as Ellington won with 849 votes to Pitts’ 223 votes. Ellington won all three precincts, taking Redbone: 620-198, Yatesville: 160-31, and The Rock: 70-24. Ellington will fill the remaining term of Rusty Blackston, who resigned to run for Upson County Commission Chairman. Ellington will be sworn into office at the BOC meeting on August 28, while Blackston, who defeated Anthony South in the primary, will face incumbent Maurice Raines in the general election on November 6.
