The Upson-Lee Knights golf team hosted the Region 4 Golf Tournament at Raintree Golf Course on Friday. Teams started at 8:30 a.m. in a torrential down pour and continued until around 2:30 p.m. when the last pairings came in.

Last season the Knights just missed qualifying for the Sectionals by three strokes, and finished as the Region Runners-Up to Spalding. However, this season the Knights qualified for the Sectionals and once again finished as the Region 4 Runners-Up to Spalding. The Jags posted a scored of 326, while the Knights finished with a score of 348. Griffin placed third with a score of 416.

“It wasn’t the best conditions out there for a golf tournament,” said Knights coach Bart Phillips. “Actually it was awful out there, but the guys did what they needed to do to move on to the Sectionals. Some of the scores that we posted were a little higher than what we have been shooting here lately, but in this monsoon, those scores are pretty good.”

Justin Gilbert led the Knights with a round of 80 as Upson-Lee No. 1 golfer, while Wil Hernandez shot an 84 as the No. 2 golfer. Zac Hendrix posted a score of 90, while Bo Davison shot a 94 as the Knights No. 4 golfer. With their score of 348, the Knights will play in the GHSA Sectionals at Bull Creek in Columbus on May 5.

If the Knights can shoot the state qualifying score and finish in the top eight of the Sectionals, they will advance to the State Golf Tournament. Bull Creek Golf Club offers two 18 hole courses, a West Course and an East Course. The East Course is 6,705 yards long from the back tees, while the West Course is 6,921 yards from the back tees. Bull Creek has a slope rating of 124 and is played on Bermuda grass.
