Offense was scarce last Friday as the Flint River Wildcats opened region play with a 14-7 road win over the Community Christian Knights.

Scarce may even be a generous term as neither offense was able to surpass 200 total yards and the entire first half was scoreless. A first quarter pick-six by the Wildcats’ safety/quarterback Seth Short was called back due to a block-in-the-back penalty, and the ensuing Flint River drive ended on a failed fourth down conversion attempt.

Neither team was able to sustain an offensive drive for the remainder of the half, but Flint River got a break at the start of the second half when CC coughed up a fumble in its own territory. The Wildcats recovered and drove the short field for the first touchdown of the game, a 1-yard run by Short. The PAT was no good, so the lead was 6-0.

Community Christian responded on their next possession, a long drive that ended with a 2-yard touchdown run and successful PAT, giving the Knights a 7-6 lead.

The Wildcats were forced to punt on the next drive, but CC was unable to move the ball outside their own 10 yard line. A bad snap on a punt attempt was recovered in the end zone by Nathan Strickland. The two-point conversion, a pass from Short to David Chester, was good. The Wildcats now led 14-7.

Community Christian was stopped on a fourth-and-one play on the next series, and on their final offensive possession, the Knights threw an interception, once again to Short.

Flint River’s defense was outstanding, allowing seven points on 157 total yards and forcing six turnovers.

The Wildcats continue region play Friday, October 25 against Dominion. It is the final home game for the Class of 2014. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
