Three big events are coming up, starting this Saturday, August 23, with the annual Boobie Ball at Bickley’s Lake, followed by the annual Thomaston-Upson Chamber of Commerce Business Expo on Thursday, September 4, at the Civic Center, and finally, the annual Smoke on the Water Chili Cook-Off and Music Festival at Bickley’s Lake, has moved to its new date of Saturday, Sept. 13.

Boobie Ball 2014

The annual Boobie Ball is a fund raiser for SUPPORT (Supporting Upson Patients Properly Over Rough Times), a non-profit, locally-formed organization whose mission is to raise money for the purpose of aiding when personal finances fall short, splurging when smiles are few, assisting when the bills are many, and improving the overall daily quality of life so that Upson County cancer patients can concentrate on what really matters – survival. In the past six years, the Boobie Ball has raised more than $160,000 for SUPPORT, with the funds going to everything from purchasing teeth to cutting grass to paying for a soldier to be able to come home and be with his grandfather when he died.

This year’s Boobie Ball at Bickley’s Lake goes from 2 p.m. until midnight and features a variety of bands, games, raffles and more. In the musical lineup this year are the High Cotton Band, Ashley Allen Band, Lady Creech and the Main Street Band, Matt Pippin, Wysteria, and capping the night off will be Loose Change. There will be a Kids’ Zone for the little ones featuring numerous inflatables and other fun things to do, a cornhole tournament, and raffles for prizes like an LG 55-inch HDTV, a JUDGE Public Defender Revolver, a Hustler Raptor Zero Turn Lawn Mower and Yeti YT 20 Roadie Cooler, a year’s supply of meat, diamonds, and more. Raffle tickets are on sale now at one for $5 or five for $20 at Thomaston Hardware, Badcock Home Furniture, Northside Pawn, and Northside Superette. There will be food and drinks available, including $20 all you can drink draft, and you are welcome to bring in coolers, but no glass, please. Tickets are $10 in advance at TUAC, Rescue Me, and Traditions, or $15 at the gate. Kids 12 and under are $5.

Business Expo 2014

The Thomaston-Upson Chamber of Commerce’s 4th Annual Business Expo is ‘Under Construction’ at the Thomaston –Upson Civic Center on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out to the Business Expo, where more that 50 local businesses will have displays and samples available for visitors. There will also be door prizes. This is not a job fair! Residents are urged to come and see what serves local and surrounding businesses have to offer.

Smoke on the Water Chili Cook-Off and Music Festival

For the last three years, the Smoke on the Water Chili Cook-Off and Music Festival has been held the last Saturday in October, competing with Yatesville’s Chitlin’ Hoedown and events at The Rock Ranch. This year, organizers decided to move the event up to Saturday, Sept. 13, to avoid conflict with any other fall event. Chili contestants are now being sought for the cook-off. There are three categories of competition. Chili has a $25 registration fee, Salsa has a $10 registration fee, and the People’s Choice is free. First Place in the Chili Cook-Off will receive a trophy and $250. Second Place will receive a trophy and $100, and Third Place will receive a trophy and $50. Salsa and People’s Choice winners will receive a trophy and bragging rights. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the musical lineup for the all-day music festival is still being finalized.
