If you have the City of Yatesville’s ceremonial American flag, pole and stand, please return it.
Mayor Cecil Moncrief advised the City Council at their July 14 meeting that sometime in the last month, someone took the flag, the flag pole, and the stand it sat in from the Senior Center, and has not returned it.
“It was here in June because we had it at the Senior Citizens meeting because we always say the Pledge to the flag. But this month it is gone,” Moncrief said. “If anyone knows anybody that got it, they need to return it. Maybe they’ll read it in the paper and get convicted and bring it on back. If not, we’ll have to purchase another flag.”
Council member Wanda Dozier recalled that the American flag and the Lion’s Club flag in the center were both bought at the same time by the Lion’s Club. Mayor Moncrief noted that the Lion’s Club flag is still in the center, it was just the American flag that is gone.
Council member Robert Releford suggested the city go ahead and purchase another ceremonial flag. Following further discussion, Council member Ronnie Riggins made a motion for the city to purchase another flag. Dozier seconded the motion and the vote was 3-0 in favor. Council members Shane Moore and Phyl Gatlin were absent.
Mayor Moncrief also noted that the city cannot keep allowing people to use the senior center for other activities and keep losing items in the process.
“We changed all the locks on these doors, and we’re still having stuff toted off,” he said. “I just don’t know what’s going on. I want the people to use the building, it is their building, it’s the public’s building, but at the same time, when they tote stuff off, they’re toting away from their own selves. If it comes down to it, we may just have to lock everything down and you bring your own silverware and everything,. But I just can’t imagine someone stealing the flag, but it’s gone.”
