Hard work on behalf of Upson’s Sheriff’s investigators has produced arrests in several cases reported over the past few weeks. William Batchelor of Thomaston has been charged in four of the nine cases, Kevin Laughrey of Thomaston has also be charged in three of the four cases Batchelor was charged in, and Michael Mitchell of Thomaston has been charged in two other of the nine cases. All of those charged remain in the Upson County Jail. Sheriff Dan Kilgore issued a press release Friday detailing the arrests.
Kevin Timothy Laughrey, 26, of 136 Poplar Grove Road, Thomaston and Bobby James Berry, 32, of 126 Rualmaine Road, Thomaston have been charged with theft by taking. These charges result from an incident on December 31, 2013 where a 2007 Artic Cat ATV four-wheel-drive vehicle valued at $4,500 was reported stolen from 811 West Moores Crossing Road. William Batchelor, 44, of 705 Sherri Street, Thomaston, has also been charged with party to a crime of theft by taking in this incident. Batchelor (allegedly) drove Kevin Laughrey to this location where Laughrey (allegedly) stole the Artic Cat. Berry’s involvement is that he worked for the owner of the Artic Cat and (allegedly) planned and took part in the theft. The Artic Cat was recovered. Bond was set at $16,000 each. All remain in the Upson County Jail.
Batchelor and Laughrey have been charged with a burglary at 252 East Moores Crossing Road. Batchelor (allegedly) entered a residence and a barn around January 1, 2014 and stole household items and shop equipment. Bond set at $10,000.
Batchelor also has been charged with theft by taking at 250 Boyt Road where he (allegedly) took a 1949 Mercury boot lid, 1959 Ford Edsel station wagon, 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan car, 1949 Mercury car, 16-foot metal trailer, Ford flat head engine, tractor boom pole, Lincoln flat head motor, tractor radiator, four-foot-by-four-foot trailer, engine hoist, and three French doors, valued at $5,335 dollars. Bond was set at $15,000.
Batchelor and Laughrey have been charged with another burglary relating to an incident on January 1, 2014 at 2471 Barnesville Hwy., Thomaston. The duo (allegedly) entered a shop building and took a Campbell Hausfield portable air compressor, Poulan chain saw, Echo weed eater and a silver gas hedge trimmer - total value $625. Bond was set at $10,000 each in this case.
Michael Brandon Mitchell, 27, of 150 Salter Road, Thomaston and Drell Donald Goodman, 32, of 408 South Church St. have both been charged with burglary from an incident at 255 Potato Creek Road in The Rock. On December 22, 2013 the resident reported the theft of an Xbox, 20 Xbox games, Turtle Back wireless headset, chrome diamond metal tool box, and a tap and die set, all valued at about $1,900 dollars. Both subjects are charged with burglary and bond was set at $12,000 dollars each. Both remain in the Upson County Jail.
Mitchell has also been charged with another burglary occurring at 36 Odom Road where he entered a room rented by another person on December 22, 2013 and took a Dell laptop computer, a Sony 26 inch TV, and six computer hard drives, all valued at about $9,000 dollars. Bond was set at $22,000 dollars in this case.
Thomas Allen Teague, 53, of 188 Green Forest Road, Yatesville has been charged with theft by taking. The theft was reported by the homeowner at the same address on December 22, 2013. Teague has been charged with stealing a gun, a nail gun, a camcorder, pearl earrings, a laptop computer, a camera case and a hp laptop, total value of $1,400. Teague remains in the Upson County Jail on a $6,000 bond.
On January 15, 2014, Jody Scott Jones, 40, of 726 Sherri St., Thomaston was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and criminal trespass. On January 3, 2014, Jones went to a residence on Zorn Road in Thomaston and threatened the occupants with a knife. Bond was set at $11,000 and Jones remains in the Upson County Jail.
On January 15, 2014, Jason Todd Chapman, 28, of 206 ½ Garner Street in Thomaston was arrested and charged with entering an auto. The incident occurred at 223 Bradshaw Road in Thomaston on December 27, 2013. Chapman stole a U.S. Ordinance .45 1911 A-1 pistol valued at $500. Bond has been set at $20,000. Chapman remains in the Upson County Jail.
On January 15, 2014, Michael Anthony Cannon , 27, of Hamilton, Ga. was arrested and charged with aggravated child molestation. Between August 1 and September 10 of 2011, Cannon (allegedly) sexually assaulted an 11-year-old female in Upson County while he was babysitting her. Bond was set at $10,000 dollars. Cannon remains in the Upson County Jail.
