Traffic in the Silvertown area will be re-routed briefly this Saturday evening when the Thomaston-Upson Rotary Club will host a 5K Reindeer Run and 1K Fun Run down Christmas Lane (R Street) and around the rest of the community. Nearly 50 people have already signed up to participate, but there is still a chance to take part in the event. Those wishing to participate can register the day of the event from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Rain or shine, the 5K will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the fun run at 5:30 p.m.
Participants in the 5K will start at the end of R Street at the Welcome to Thomaston sign and will travel down the road to 3rd avenue, then to L Street, Goodrich Avenue and through the Greatest Generation Memorial Park to the start/finish line. In addition to the aforementioned streets, O Street will also be closed briefly throughout the race. The Fun Run will take place from R Street to Goodrich Avenue and back.
The event is a fundraiser for the Thomaston-Upson Rotary Club, with proceeds going to support their yearly projects. Some of the projects the club participates in are providing school supplies for the local schools, providing GED scholarships, hosting the Teacher of the Year luncheon, sponsoring students for the TUAC art camp, sponsoring the Food for Thought program and sponsoring Books for Tots.
All ages are welcome to come participate and certificates will be given out to the winners at the completion of the race. The cost is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the 1K Fun Run. Several local businesses have donated items for participants of the event. Those who registered by November 29 will receive their t-shirt at the event; others wishing to get a t-shirt will not receive theirs until after Christmas.
