When it comes to all the changes with healthcare coverage, it can be hard to know which way to go or where to even begin. However, all that confusion can be cleared up thanks to the help of Health Navigator Candace McBride. Through the University of Georgia, McBride is working out of the Upson County Extension Agency office to work with individuals and businesses through the changes of the Affordable Care Act.

“I am here to help people what to do with the changes for insurance, give out the correct information and debunk the myths,” said McBride who covers 20 other counties in addition to Upson.

She noted that some of the changes include free preventative services, such as no co-pay for vaccines, coverage provided for pre-existing conditions and children can now stay on their parents insurance until they are 26 years old. She continued, stating that the changes mainly affect small businesses and individuals who do not have insurance through their place of employment. For those on Medicare and Medicaid there are no changes.

McBride added that helping people has always been a passion of hers and she is glad this gives her the opportunity to continue doing so.

“I have worked with Georgia residents through the aspects of benefits, services available, resources and this offered me the chance to continue doing that, which is why it appealed to me,” she said. “The information is simple to understand once you sit down and look into it, but if you don’t have the time to do it yourself, that is what I am here for.”

There will be an open enrollment outreach session at the Hightower Library on Thursday, October 24 from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. for anyone who wishes to come and find out more about the Affordable Care Act and the changes it is bringing about. McBride can also work with smaller groups or individuals and you may set up a time for a meeting by contacting her at the Extension Office at 706-647-8989 or email at mcbride@uga.edu.
