Story Time available for pre-schoolers every Wednesday at Hightower Memorial

Beloved author Dr. Seuss once wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,” and there is no better time to start that journey than as a child. To help instill a love of reading, the Hightower Memorial Library is offering Story Time at the library every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The stories will be primarily geared towards preschoolers ages three to five and parents are welcome to join in on the fun each week.
Wanda Bennett will be leading Story Time and couldn’t be more excited about interacting with the children and sharing her love of reading.
“I just love reading the little kids books. In fact I think many were written for the adults too, not just the kids,” said Bennett, who has worked in libraries for over 30 years and has recently taken over as Director of Children’s Services at the Hightower Memorial Library.
She credits her love of reading to her mother who used to read to her every night. She carried that tradition on with her own children and her 15 grandchildren, so she noted she has had plenty of practice acting silly enough to make the stories come alive.
Bennett stated that working with kids is one of her favorite parts of the job and she is looking forward to meeting some new little friends each week. When asked what her favorite type of book to read is, she noted she really loved rhyming books and ones that repeat things over and over, such as “The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly.” They give children the chance to pick up on the story quickly and learn to repeat the parts so that way they can join in on the fun.
Although it is a main part of story time, Bennett wants to do more than just read with the children and plans to incorporate a lot of music and crafts to go along with the stories. She likes to use props to help liven up the stories and get her audience participating.
She was all set to begin last week, but when Story Time rolled around, there were no children to be found. However, she stated she is not going to let it get her down and she is excited to hopefully meet some new friends to read with her this week. Story Time will take place in the multi-purpose room of the Hightower Memorial Library at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
